Okay ladies, this is basically a shell-thread meant to start the ideas flowing for this committee. Should be very fun to get creative here!

Wondering first-off whether anyone has any contacts at Writer's Digest or the like?

I had to throw this under the Social Media header because I cannot create new topic threads. If anyone has insights into how-to, please lmk, as my OCD/categorizing tendencies are making me not love it under here Wink

Oh! I'm here! Sorry! I don't have contacts with Writers Digest, but I bet with enough effort we could find a contact. If someone else in the group doesn't. Plus, at least we have a bit of time to make said contact.

What's the best way to begin here? Make a list of outlets we'd be interested in approaching when the time comes? I say treat it like college applications: reaches, just right, and safety outlets. Does that make any sense?

I like how you're thinking here, Chandler.

I do think, when it comes to placing stories, we'll need to have a story. And our best story, I think, is our mission. I can WD and some if the bigger outlets eating that angle up. So maybe we wait a bit til our mission activities are underway, then we pitch an article.

But to start, let's definitely brainstorm a big list of alt-media (and how do we define that: not-Twitter, FB, tumblr or Instagram? I guess we need to coordinate w/Social Media on that one. I'll post a thread to that end) along the lines you said: reaches, just right and safety. Brilliant!

And since I'm on the road to VT and it seems like a good time to brainstorm, I'll start:

Reaches:

Pitch a story to Writers Digest along the lines of Debut Authors Giving Back (or another angle)

Apply to one of the SCBWI Regional Conferences to present a panel discussion on selling a YA novel, the power of organizing (like the F15), smthg along those lines. Topic TBD!

Just Right:

get an article in the SCBWI newsletter

Do something fun on YouTube. Maybe a mash-up of first lines, or something funny. We could film it at our retreat!

Do a fun/informative video series with some kind of "insider tip" to how we got our deal, or how we think we broke through. And/or, a writing tip for aspiring YA writers.

ALTERNATE MEDIA COMMITTEE! Empty Re: ALTERNATE MEDIA COMMITTEE!

Hey I love your college analogy Chandler!! I did an online interview with Chuck Sambuchino on WD a while ago, and my agent Adriann is buddies with him, so I can try to help there -- would love to get into the print magazine. SCBWI I'd be happy to contact Stephen Mooser as I've reached out to him before, back when we were brainstorming missions... maybe we should find a unique angle for each of these publications?

Another idea, have you guys heard of YARN? There's a lot of these online writing communities (Movellas, YARN, Figment) -- and a few casual interviews with some group members I think could be great.

Other reaches -- Poets and Writers, perhaps? Getting into one of the Writer's Digest texts (like Guide to Finding a Literary Agent -- maybe a few of us? Again Chuck is editor here -- he's ubiquitous Wink

Yes yes to all of these, great ideas!
YARN was exactly the kind of online writing comm I was trying to think of; we really ought to be in these, yes, snd it doesn't have to be en masse, as you say

What this demonstrates to me is that we could easily have our hands full without taking on the extra social media stuff (and no, that irony not lost on me, Lee! Wink . I'll pull together a bunch of these ideas into a doc with what's required, and maybe put it to a timeline. We won't overreach -- we're all going to be wild over the next few months, imagine -- but I bet we can put some cool profile-enhancing stuff in play pretty easily. Cheers, and happy new year (on the road to Cannon Mtn now, where it's 8 degrees!)

YAY KIM!! I love this, thanks for putting together the doc Wink! And I totally agree that this could be doable if a bunch of us divide and conquer. Enjoy Cannon Mtn (hope you've got coat and hat and gloves and scarf... I'm a winter wimp!)

I think my post got eaten from awhile ago. Oh well. These are great ideas. A doc with a timeline would be fabulous. Obviously some of it is merely planning for things to be in place for 2015. We should try to look at when people release so that we can group accordingly. Like you said, I think we can get some solid coverage just by dividing and conquering.

Lee, I can totally see the print versions of the SCBWI magazines loving something like this. I did an article once for the Sprouts one in New Jersey I think? They're nice little magazines.

Guys, I am so sorry I just found this thread! Lee, I loved that post, BTW! Now I'm here.

I'll do some brainstorming. I have an in at Nanowrimo, but it might not be the right market/audience?

I got this in my email the other day from ALA. I wonder how these get set up and if we could get in on one? This one is for an online panel of four debut authors. It seems these things are sponsored by lit agencies and pub houses?

Here is a link in case you want to check it out.

Are you all familiar with this? It's advertised in Publisher's Lunch all the time, and today is the first time I actually clicked to look at it. Would this be something we could do?
